The built-up, raised surface of the design (painstakingly created through the Togidashi-Taka maki-e technique) helps bring these flowers to life. Meanwhile the wings of the largest butterfly, hovering on the cap near the clip, are beautifully detailed with inlaid abalone shells (raden).
